As the Indigenous Community Coordinator, you will play a vital role in fostering positive relationships and enhancing the well-being of the Urban Indigenous community in Portage la Prairie. You will be responsible for coordinating and implementing various initiatives that promote cultural preservation, community development, and empowerment. Your primary objective will be to ensure the needs, interests, and aspirations of the Urban Indigenous community are represented and supported.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Community Engagement and Collaboration:
• Establish and maintain positive relationship with individuals, groups, agencies, organizations, orders of government, etc., who are addressing issues of concern to Urban Indigenous people.
• Maintain and lead a multisector collaboration table.
• Act as a liaison between the Indigenous community and local government agencies, educational institutions, and other relevant organizations.
• Organize and facilitate regular meetings, and events to encourage community participation and collaboration.
2. Program Development and Implementation:
• Identify community needs and priorities through consultation and needs assessments.
• Design, develop, and implement culturally sensitive programs and initiatives that address identified needs, including but not limited to education, employment, health, and cultural preservation.
• Coordinate the delivery of initiatives, ensuring their effectiveness and accessibility to community members.
3. Advocacy and Representation:
• Advocate for the rights, interests, and well-being of urban Indigenous community members.
• Serve as a representative of the Indigenous community in various local committees, working groups, and public forums.
• Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to promote inclusion, diversity, and cultural understanding.
4. Resource Management:
• Manage allocated budgets and resources effectively and responsibly.
• Prepare reports, proposals, and other relevant documentation for funding agencies, government bodies, and community partners.
5. Cultural Preservation and Education:
• Develop and implement strategies to preserve and promote Indigenous culture, traditions, and languages.
• Plan and organize cultural events, workshops, and activities that celebrate Indigenous heritage and foster community pride.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Strong understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and issues affecting Indigenous communities.
• Knowledge of the local Indigenous community in Portage la Prairie is highly desirable.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation.
• Familiarity with grant writing and fundraising processes.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Respectful and culturally sensitive approach to community engagement and collaboration.
• Proficiency in using computer software and technology for administrative tasks.
Education and Experience:
• A post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant field such as Indigenous studies, community development, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Previous experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations, or initiatives is an asset.
